Ruoak Wholly Smoke (Gandalf) is an Anglo Arab gelding born in 2003. He won the 80km Heavyweight State Championships in 2009 including Best Conditioned at only his 3rd (and qualifying) 80km ride. He then had time off to just be a horse until we began campaigning him in earnest again in 2012.

Out of the Thoroughbred mare Likely Prospect by Djemeshid he is truly the gentle(man) giant of our horses.

In 2012, he completed a number of 80km rides including

  • 3rd heavyweight at the Pistenbroke (with special recognition for heaviest rider)
  • 1st and BC middleweight at Highbury
  • Commended for condition after 6 hours in the bush when the strapper fell off, WA State Champs 2013
  • Let''s not talk about Margaret River

2013 was used to qualify Gandalf, Susie and support team for the Quilty 2014, with some very successful rides including:

  • equal first middleweight 80km Wilga 2103
  • equal first middleweight 80km Collie 2013
  • first and best conditioned middleweight 80km Highbury
  • second middleweight 160km Collie Classic (thus qualifying Susie for the Quilty)
  • lost again at Bridgetown (with strapper attached) resulting in 8th place for a 40km training ride after completing 50km.

2014 was a highly successful year, with a number of good 80km completions and 3rd place middleweight 160km at the State Championships. The season for Gandalf and Susie culminated with a successful and hard fought completion of the Tom Quilty Gold Cup at Wagin, achieving 18th place in the MW division.

In 2015 he campaigned in heavyweight division achieving a significant number of 1st and Best Conditioned placings. Unfortunately a minor tendon injury late in the season resulted in him vetting out of the 160km State Champioships at th 80km mark and he is currently enjoying a well deserved rest.
